In 1893 he purchased the land in front of his home and built a Japanese style garden. A small stream ran through the property and he used it to build a huge pond which he filled with water lilies. Thus began the final and greatest series of paintings of his lifetime; a series of 250 sumptuous impressionist masterpieces which occupied the last thirty years of his life.
